Netflix Super Bowl Ads

Netflix has an on-off relationship with the Super Bowl, known as the biggest sporting event of the year in the United States. It’s a time when companies spend a fortune for a little bit of time to sell their product or service. So let’s go back and look at all the Netflix entries since 2014.

While this list isn’t extensive, since Netflix hasn’t always featured in the Super Bowl (it might have something to do with the fact that a 30-second ad costs more than 7 million in 2023) There have been many times when Netflix has partnered with another company, made a general platform announcement, showcased their upcoming titles, or focused on a specific title.

2014 – General Platform Announcement

In 2014, just a year after entering the content game, Netflix’s ads were used primarily to promote its list of licensed content. In the 30-second ad, they announce many titles that are long gone from Netflix, including Sons of Anarchy, Hugo, Mission Impossible, thor, transformers, true grain, The Walking Dead and The office.


2015-2016 – No ads


2017 – Stranger Things 2

After the success of Stranger Things season 1, massive anticipation was building for Strange things season 2.

The 30-second ad gave us some first glimpses of what we would eventually see in October later in the year.

We should also mention that Super Bowl LI was very present in the documentary. Gaga: five foot tworeleased in September 2017. It followed Lady Gaga’s preparations to make the halftime performance a reality.


2018 – Cloverfield: Paradox

This ad, hands down, was Netflix’s best and most exciting Super Bowl ad to date.

The reason we say that is because of how it happened. The Cloverfield Paradox it was a movie that had been rumored to be in development for a while. Still, it wasn’t until the night of the Super Bowl that this trailer dropped, revealing that it would not only be coming to Netflix, but would be available in the next few hours.

Although The Cloverfield Paradox turned out to be panned by critics, the nature of this announcement was certainly exciting and completely unexpected.


2019 – Our Planet: A Team

Netflix’s 2019 Super Bowl ad might be the last the streamer puts out.

This year’s ad was noticeably smaller than previous years, opting to highlight Netflix’s first real foray into the nature documentary space with Our Planet by David Attenborough.


2020-2021 – No Ads

Netflix did not see a major Netflix Super Bowl announcement that will continue until 2021. No official reasons have been given and it was not because Netflix ads are banned (which is the case in Disney-owned networks).


2022 – Netflix Movie Ad

Despite many rumors in 2022 surrounding a potential Stranger Things season 4 trailer, the main trailer that aired early in the game heralded its 2022 movie slate that was revealed in early February 2022.

The trailer is a snippet from that announcement with a particular emphasis at the end on the March 2022 release of The Adam Project Starring Ryan Reynolds.

The re-edited trailer also featured brief sneak peeks at the following films:

2023 – General Motors + Netflix

re-teaming with Will Ferrell againGeneral Motors also partnered with Netflix in 2023 with two banner ads.

The ad, which promotes GM’s range of electric cars, uses assets from two major Netflix properties, including squid game and army of the dead. In addition to the ads, the announcement came with a commitment from Netflix. His Press release state:

“Netflix is ​​joining the movement and will increase the presence of electric vehicles in Netflix-produced shows and movies, where relevant, while also taking steps to enable more sustainable productions.

As a result of the partnership, Netflix supports and educates creators, helping them better understand how electric vehicles can complement and enhance their stories. Over the course of the next year, inspired by this partnership, GM electric vehicles will be seen in select Netflix shows and movies, including Love is blind, weird eye and Unstablewhich will feature Chevrolet Bolt EUV, GMC HUMMER EV Pickup and Cadillac LYRIQ respectively.
